Italy introduces new national school curriculum guidelines for 2026
The Italian Ministry of Education and Merit has released new national guidelines for school curricula, set to take effect during the 2026/2027 academic year. The reforms require schools to redesign their educational planning, assessment methods, and institutional curricula from preschool through lower secondary school.
The new framework emphasizes strategic pillars including STEM subjects, digital competencies, and the role of artificial intelligence. It aims to move beyond formal compliance toward a shared educational vision that integrates specific competencies across different grade levels.
However, the guidelines have faced criticism regarding their implementation and content. Some educators have pointed to perceived contradictions between the emphasis on Western identity in history programs and the inclusion of mathematical history, which often relies on Middle Eastern and Asian contributions. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding conceptual errors in specific disciplines, such as mathematics, and the potential for administrative autonomy to lead to educational fragmentation without clear operational tools.
