Italy introduces singer-songwriters and opera into school curricula

The Italian Ministry of Education and Merit has introduced new guidelines for secondary schools to integrate singer-songwriter music and opera into literature curricula. This initiative, led by Giuseppe Valditara, aims to modernize teaching methods by pairing the traditional literary canon with 20th-century musical texts.

Students will analyze the works of prominent Italian singer-songwriters, including Fabrizio De André, Francesco Guccini, and Francesco De Gregori, as well as the contributions of Mogol and Lucio Battisti. The focus will be on studying metric and stylistic characteristics, as well as the historical and social contexts of these compositions.

Additionally, the curriculum will incorporate the operatic tradition through the study of libretti from composers such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. This approach seeks to create a connection between the history of the Italian language and theatrical production, fostering critical development through diverse expressive models.
