Italy introduces toll refunds for highway delays and launches four‑hour ferry from Croatia

From 1 June, Italian motorway operators will refund part of the toll fee to drivers who are delayed by road works or prolonged traffic jams. Refunds depend on the length of the trip and the waiting time – for journeys up to 30 km a claim can be made regardless of delay; for 30‑50 km trips a delay of at least 10 minutes is required, and for trips over 50 km a delay of at least 15 minutes. Longer stoppages trigger larger refunds: 50 % of the toll for 60‑119 minutes, 75 % for 120‑179 minutes and a full refund for 180 minutes or more. The scheme does not apply to delays caused by accidents, weather, emergency interventions or other exceptional circumstances. Drivers can request the refund by registering the vehicle’s licence plate or by submitting a scanned receipt from the toll booth.

A seasonal high‑speed catamaran now links Zadar, Croatia and Ancona, Italy, cutting the crossing time to four hours. The service runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 2 July, then adds Monday and Wednesday sailings through August. The outbound journey departs Zadar at 08:00 and arrives in Ancona at 12:00, with a return trip scheduled for 14:00. The new line offers a quick option for weekend getaways or as a starting point for further travel in Italy.
