Italy investigates cyberattacks on commercial refrigeration systems
Cyberattacks targeting commercial refrigeration systems have affected various food businesses across Italy, including supermarkets in Sicily. Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in internet-connected temperature control systems, remotely increasing temperatures and risking the integrity of the cold chain.
In Sicily, the attacks reportedly impacted approximately 20 points of sale in the provinces of Palermo, Catania, and Ragusa, leading to food spoilage. Giovanni Arena, CEO of the Arena Group and representative for Federdistribuzione Sicilia, noted that the breaches occurred through call centers responsible for remote monitoring, using direct IP access to manipulate control parameters.
The Italian government, through a meeting at Palazzo Chigi involving national security and cybersecurity officials, has stated there is no immediate public health alarm. Officials noted that the incidents primarily affected businesses using obsolete security technologies, whereas larger distribution networks with updated protection systems remained largely secure.
