Italy investigation launched into newborn death

An investigation has been launched in Italy following the death of a newborn baby shortly after birth. The delivery began at the San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Foligno, but complications necessitated an emergency transfer to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia.

Despite receiving intensive care in Perugia, the infant passed away. The parents have filed a formal complaint to determine whether the death resulted from medical negligence or was an unpredictable and unavoidable complication.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has seized medical documentation and ordered a medico-legal examination. An autopsy, expected to be conducted by forensic pathologist Donatella Fedeli, will be a central component of the inquiry. Investigators will analyze clinical records and the timing of medical interventions to reconstruct the sequence of care provided during the delivery and the subsequent transfer between hospitals.
