Southern Italy wildfires linked to cat‑arson tactics
Investigators in Calabria have uncovered a brutal arson method in which cats were fitted with rags soaked in flammable liquid and released to spread fires across the Pollino National Park and surrounding forests. The tactic was accompanied by candles, delayed ignition devices and glass bottles with wicks, indicating a coordinated criminal operation. Authorities recorded more than 160 wildfires in the region, one of which claimed the life of a firefighter.
The Italian Association for the Protection of Animals and other NGOs have offered a €1,000 reward for information leading to arrests. Similar cat‑arson techniques were reported in Sicily in 2016 and near Vesuvius in 2017, suggesting a repeat pattern linked to organised crime. The blazes have forced the evacuation of a senior home on Sardinia, disrupted rail services in Calabria and forced extensive aerial firefighting with Canadair planes, Super‑Puma helicopters and military assets. By late July, Italy had logged over 24 000 hectares of land burned this year, with the majority of the damage occurring in the southern regions.
