Italy issues egg recall and monitors Shamonda virus in livestock

In Italy, health authorities have issued a recall for certain egg products and are monitoring a viral outbreak in livestock.

The Ministry of Health announced a recall for Avicola Alberti Tamara ‘Speciali Pasta Gialla’ six-egg packs, weighing approximately 350 grams. Produced in Ventasso, Reggio Emilia, the recall is due to a chemical non-compliance rather than bacterial contamination. Consumers are advised not to consume the affected batches, identified by the dates October 7, 8, and 9, 2026, and to return them to the point of sale.

Separately, the Shamonda virus has been detected in cattle and buffalo farms in the Salerno province. The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno (IZSM) is monitoring the situation, noting that the virus is transmitted via Culicoides biting midges. Authorities have clarified that there is no risk to human health through meat or milk consumption. The virus, previously seen in Africa, Australia, and Japan, has recently appeared in Western Europe and northern Italian provinces.
