Italy issues red alerts for nine cities amid extreme heatwave
Italy is facing its fifth heatwave of the summer, with extreme temperatures impacting the central and southern regions. The Italian Ministry of Health has issued a red alert for nine cities, including Rome, Bari, Messina, Palermo, Catania, and Cagliari, marking the highest level of risk.
In Sardinia, temperatures reached as high as 45.8 degrees Celsius in Jerzu. Southern Italy is also experiencing tropical nights, where temperatures remain above 30 degrees Celsius. To mitigate health risks, authorities have advised children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses to avoid outdoor activities between 11:00 and 18:00.
The extreme heat has also triggered forest fires in Sicily. In the area near Mount Gulino, two helicopters have been deployed to assist in efforts to control the flames. While the south struggles with heat, northern regions like Lombardy have faced severe storms and hail.
