Italy judicial reform: CSM elections and court restructuring debates

In Italy, discussions regarding the judiciary are intensifying through both institutional elections and legislative debates. Fabrizio Malagnino, a magistrate from the Court of Lecce and candidate for the High Council of the Judiciary (CSM), is advocating for a selection process based on merit rather than political dynamics. He emphasizes the need for a CSM free from external conditioning to address issues such as staffing shortages in judicial offices.

Simultaneously, the Justice Commission in the Chamber of Deputies is debating a government bill on judicial geography. The debate has seen a surge in amendments from various deputies seeking to reopen small courts or establish new judicial offices in their respective regions, reversing cuts made in 2012. Proposals include reopening the Court of Bassano del Grappa, establishing a second Court of Appeal in Verona, and creating new judicial sections in cities such as Parma, Sassari, Lucera, and Olbia.
