Italy launches coastal defense projects to combat erosion
Various coastal defense projects are being launched across Italy to combat erosion and protect historical and economic assets.
In Tortoreto, a 12 million euro project is scheduled to begin by the end of October. This initiative involves the installation of 31 new anti-erosion barriers, following similar works in Alba Adriatica and Villa Rosa. The project is part of a broader 129 million euro regional plan aimed at safeguarding beaches, tourism infrastructure, and the local economy. Completion of all works in the area is targeted for autumn 2027.
In the municipality of Pula, a 14 million euro project has been designed to protect the ancient Roman site of Nora. The plan includes a 260-meter coastal barrier constructed from natural andesite rocks to blend with the landscape. The structure is intended to last 100 years and will protect archaeological remains near the Temple of Esculapius. The project includes environmental safeguards, such as monitoring by marine biologists to protect local flora and fauna.
