Italy Launches First Sustainability Manager Course for Cultural Institutions

A new postgraduate program titled “Sustainability Manager and Strategist for Cultural Institutions” will run from 31 August to 27 September 2026, aiming to train professionals who can embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices throughout the management of museums, galleries and other cultural bodies. The course is organized by Institution School and is led by Martin Neureiter, the former head of the international group that drafted ISO 26000 on social responsibility. Curriculum topics include governance, ESG reporting, energy‑saving measures, carbon‑footprint assessment of artwork transport, and sustainable fundraising, with contributions from economist Pier Luigi Sacco and other experts.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in Italy toward “green‑skilling,” the acquisition of both technical and soft skills needed to meet new EU ESG directives and market expectations. Companies are urged to integrate sustainability into all functions—from supply‑chain decisions to product design and human‑resource practices—rather than treating it as a separate department. The push is presented as essential for legal compliance, cost optimisation and career advancement.
