Italy launches highway toll refund scheme from June 2026

From 1 June 2026 Italy’s transport regulator introduced a new system that reimburses motorists when toll‑paid journeys are delayed by construction works or prolonged traffic blocks. Refund eligibility depends on the length of the travelled segment and the duration of the delay: trips under 30 km qualify automatically; for 30‑50 km a delay of at least 10 minutes is required; for over 50 km the threshold rises to 15 minutes. The amount refunded is proportional to the blockage time – 50 % of the toll for interruptions of 60‑119 minutes, 75 % for 120‑179 minutes, and a full 100 % for blocks exceeding three hours.

Initially the scheme applies only to journeys managed by a single highway concessionaire; an extension to routes involving multiple concessionaires is planned for 1 December 2026. Drivers must submit a claim online through the respective concessionaire’s website, and refunds are paid only when the total toll exceeds €1. Certain situations are excluded, such as emergency works after accidents, weather‑related emergencies, rescue operations, and routine maintenance like grass cutting or signage repairs.
