Italy launches mental health and addiction prevention initiatives

In Italy, local initiatives are focusing on mental health and addiction prevention for adolescents. In Vasto, a new listening service for addiction prevention has been established at Salesiani CNOS/FAP in collaboration with the Municipality of Vasto. The service targets youth aged 11 to 17 struggling with substance use—including alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and medication—as well as gambling, internet, and digital technology addiction. It also offers support to families and friends seeking guidance.

Meanwhile, in Trapani, the ‘Yellow September’ initiative was held at the Chiostro San Domenico to raise awareness about suicide prevention. The event emphasized the importance of schools, families, and adults recognizing signs of distress in young people. The initiative follows the global ‘Yellow September’ movement, which originated in the United States and was expanded in Brazil, aiming to break the taboo surrounding mental health struggles and encourage people to seek help.
