Italy launches mental health initiatives for at-risk youth

New initiatives in Italy are targeting mental health and social reintegration for vulnerable youth in criminal or correctional contexts.

In Lombardy, the “Giovani al Centro” project, implemented by Cooperativa A&I scs Onlus and supported by the Buddhist Institute of Italy Soka Gakkai, is working with the Monza, San Vittore, and “Cesare Beccaria” juvenile detention centers. The program provides psychological support, educational opportunities, and personalized rehabilitation for approximately 62 young detainees to help them manage emotions and prepare for social and professional inclusion after release.

In Sicily, the Asp di Trapani has established three multidisciplinary teams (EMI) to support minors and young adults living in high-risk criminal environments. Following regional law, these teams consist of 14 professionals, including neuropsychiatrists, sociologists, and social workers. The initiative aims to create a coordinated network between health services, the judiciary, law enforcement, and schools to provide social protection and family support.
