Italy launches nationwide Liceo Matematico pilot in 150 schools

The Ministry of Education, after a favorable opinion from the Superior Council of Public Education, has authorized a national experimental programme called the Liceo Matematico. Starting the next school year, roughly 150 secondary schools across Italy will add a specialised mathematics track.

The scheme provides extra mathematics lessons—about one additional hour per week, amounting to roughly 33 hours per year and 165 hours over the five‑year course—and integrates interdisciplinary laboratory activities in physics, natural sciences, art and literature. Universities such as Salerno, Bologna, Milan, Bari, Rome and others will coordinate the curriculum and supply laboratory support.

Participating schools include Liceo Galileo Galilei in Legnano, Liceo Severi‑Correnti in Milan, Liceo Europa Unita in Lissone and several others in Lombardy, involving an estimated 7,000 students. The programme aims to strengthen scientific literacy, critical thinking and research skills among secondary‑school pupils.
