Italy launches radon gas monitoring and awareness initiatives

New initiatives regarding radon gas monitoring and awareness are being implemented in Italy. In the Bergamo province, a citizen science project promoted by ATS Bergamo and ARPA Lombardia is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. The year-long campaign will involve residents of nine municipalities, including Bergamo, Stezzano, and Dalmine, allowing them to monitor radon concentrations in their homes using passive dosimeters. The goal is to collect data to better understand gas distribution and mitigate health risks associated with prolonged exposure to this natural underground gas.

In Catania, health professionals and experts held a specialized seminar at the University of Catania to discuss radon risks, measurement techniques, and prevention. Organized by the Order of Health Professions (TSRM and PSTRP), the event focused on the technical aspects of ionizing radiation, decay processes, and the necessity of reliable measurement procedures to comply with safety regulations. The discussion highlighted the distinction between natural radon exposure and non-ionizing radiation from sources such as mobile phones.
