Italy advances environmental protection and circular economy initiatives

Various environmental and sustainability initiatives are being implemented across Italy. In the marine sector, Legambiente has raised alarms regarding the impact of port infrastructure on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Secche della Meloria Protected Area, warning that dredging and sediment movement could increase water turbidity. Meanwhile, in Venice, a new underwater system described as a ‘subaqueous brain’ is expected by the end of 2026 to manage hydraulic pumps and protect Piazza San Marco from tidal flooding below 110 cm.

In the realm of circular economy and waste management, Biorepack’s General Director, Carmine Pagnozzi, highlighted Italy’s leadership in the compostable bioplastics sector. Additionally, the RIPA project, funded by the Ministry of Environment, is launching a pilot program at Lake Fusaro to reduce plastic pollution in aquatic environments through recovery and analysis. COREPLA has also entered a two-year partnership with Prosecco DOC Imoco Volley Conegliano to promote PET bottle recycling via ‘ecocompattatori’ at sporting events.

Institutional efforts include Ispra President Maria Alessandra Gallone emphasizing the importance of data-driven prevention to manage territorial risks. On the academic front, the University of Insubria celebrated its first graduate in Environmental and Workplace Prevention Techniques, marking a milestone for specialized professional training in health and safety.
