Italy launches Vergilius Plus system to monitor average vehicle speed

Polizia Stradale and ANAS have introduced Vergilius Plus, an advanced system for monitoring the average speed of vehicles on Italy’s main roads. The technology uses high‑resolution cameras that automatically read licence plates and identify vehicle categories, then calculates the average speed between two detection points.

The system is now operational on 36 road sections—including Autostrada A2 “Del Mediterraneo” (Salerno‑Buonabitacolo), Strada Statale 1 Aurelia (km 11+950‑23+500), Strada Statale 7 quater “Domitiana” (km 44+630‑54+300), Strada Statale 309 “Romea” (km 1+680‑7+080) and the SS145 “Sorrentina” variant within the Galleria Santa Maria di Pozzano (km 0+072‑4+950)—covering roughly 211 km in both directions. Managed by the Polizia Stradale, the system records violations and issues fines, aiming to improve road safety, reduce speed‑related accidents, and encourage drivers to maintain lawful speeds throughout entire monitored stretches.
