IMF forecasts Romanian recession while Meloni projects Italian growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its economic outlook for Romania, forecasting a 0.5 percent contraction in economic output for the current year. For 2026, the IMF expects a 2.2 percent growth rate, a significant downward revision from previous spring forecasts. Inflation in Romania is projected to average 8.2 percent in 2026.

In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the Assolombarda general assembly, stating that Italian economic growth could reach 1 percent in 2026. While noting the economy's resilience, she emphasized the need for structural responses to energy costs and called for greater flexibility from the European Union regarding public accounts.

Discussions in Milan also highlighted the role of industrial competitiveness and the adoption of artificial intelligence. Business leaders noted that while growth remains modest, the integration of technology and the need for energy stability are critical for long-term productivity.
