Italy leads EU nations in implementing pay transparency rules

The European Union's Pay Transparency Directive aims to combat wage discrimination and the gender pay gap by requiring salary information in job advertisements. Although the deadline for member states to transpose the directive into national law was June 7, most countries have failed to meet this requirement.

Italy has emerged as a leader among major European economies by implementing the rules. Data from the hiring platform Indeed shows that the proportion of job postings in Italy containing salary information rose from 26% in July 2025 to 61% in July of this year. This makes Italy the country with the highest share of salary-disclosed adverts among Europe's five largest economies.

As of November, only five EU member states had successfully transposed the directive: Italy, Slovakia, Malta, Lithuania, and Greece. Other nations have seen different levels of progress; Spain has made limited advancements, Germany has delayed implementation until early 2027, and France's status remains unspecified.
