Measles outbreaks reported in United States and Europe

The United States and Europe are experiencing significant measles activity. In the U.S., the 2026 outbreak has reached over 3,000 cases, marking one of the highest levels in 35 years. While the CDC has reported 3,471 confirmed cases and 301 hospitalizations, it is currently working with epidemiologists to establish standardized parameters for counting measles-related deaths. This follows a dispute regarding four reported deaths in Pennsylvania, where officials have debated whether the virus was the underlying cause.

In the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA), the ECDC reported 2,339 infections across 30 states between August 2025 and July 2026. Italy has recorded the highest number of cases in the region, with 640 infections during the monitored period. Other countries with high case numbers include Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, and France. Despite the high number of infections, no deaths attributable to measles were reported in the EU/EEA during this 12-month window. Health experts note that the virus is particularly impacting young children, with high incidence rates among infants and those aged one to four.
