Italy leads mass repatriation of 53 Asian citizens via charter flight
In a major operation coordinated by the Italian State Police with support from Frontex, a charter flight has repatriated 53 Asian citizens to their home countries. Italy led the intervention, repatriating 37 individuals escorted by the Department of Public Security, while 16 others were expelled from Cyprus (6) and Greece (10).
Among the 37 individuals repatriated from Italy, several had criminal records involving offenses against persons, property, public security, drugs, and illegal immigration. Notable cases include a man previously arrested for setting a forest fire near Trieste and later for assaulting police officers. Additionally, one individual was expelled using the new accelerated asylum procedures at EU borders established by the EU Migration Pact, which allows for the immediate rejection of unfounded claims.
The entire operation was conducted under the supervision of the Guarantor for the Rights of Detainees and the Frontex Office for Fundamental Rights.
