Italy legal disputes arise over conversion of discovered Lira currency

Legal disputes are emerging in Italy regarding the conversion of old Lira currency into Euros after the discovery of forgotten funds.

In one instance, a 69-year-old woman in Villa Literno discovered a 1954 Banco di Napoli passbook in her cellar. The original balance of 5,104 lire was estimated to be worth approximately 142,000 euros after accounting for legal interest, revaluation, and capitalization. The claimant successfully obtained the reimbursement through legal assistance.

In a separate case, Capuchin friars discovered 160,728,000 lire (approximately 80,000 euros) hidden in a chest within a property left to them in a will. The Bank of Italy rejected their request to convert the currency, citing that the deadline for Lira-to-Euro conversion had expired.

Legal representatives for the friars are challenging this decision in court, arguing that under Article 2935 of the Italian Civil Code, the statute of limitations should only begin to run from the day the right can be exercised—in this case, the date the money was actually discovered in 2024.
