Italy local commerce faces bureaucracy and generational turnover risks

An investigation titled ‘The value of the civil and economic experience of senior entrepreneurs’ reveals that Italian local commerce is facing significant challenges. Data presented by Fondazione 50&Più and Fondazione Giuseppe Orlando indicates that while more than half of senior entrepreneurs wish to pass skills to younger generations, bureaucracy and a lack of structured generational turnover are hindering business continuity.

Key factors contributing to commercial desertification include high management costs (41.5%), competition from large-scale distribution (37.2%), the rise of online shopping (34%), and bureaucracy (30.3%). These factors have led to social and economic consequences, such as a 71.4% increase in vacant commercial premises, reduced urban livability (68.8%), and weakened social relations (65.1%).
