Italy local government technicians face job risks over PNRR contracts
Approximately 2,000 specialized technicians and officials working within local authorities across Italy face potential early dismissal due to uncertainty surrounding contracts linked to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and cohesion policies. In Sardinia alone, over 250 professionals are affected, including those in the metropolitan cities of Cagliari and Sassari, as well as various provinces and mountain communities.
The crisis stems from a directive issued by the Presidency of the Council on October 9, which requires administrations to recognize costs by October 23 and ensure contract expenses are settled by December 31. While the note does not explicitly mandate the early termination of employment, interpretative uncertainties have led some local entities to begin termination procedures.
Parliamentary representatives, including Silvio Lai, have submitted inquiries to relevant ministers, requesting uniform operational instructions and clarity on the resources available to ensure work continuity. Advocates warn that losing these professionals could compromise the ability of municipalities to manage and secure vital funding for essential local projects.
