Italy Defense Minister links recent urban violence to hybrid warfare

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has characterized recent violent unrest in cities such as Milan, Turin, and Bologna as a form of ‘hybrid warfare’. Speaking at the Defense Procurement Forum in Rome, Crosetto argued that these incidents differ from past unrest because they are fueled by unconventional tools, specifically social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

Crosetto expressed concern that foreign nations may use algorithms and artificial intelligence to study and manipulate the minds of young people. He noted that while three out of ten young people participated in recent demonstrations, six out of ten share the specific demands, suggesting a ‘counter-education’ occurring outside of schools and families that conflicts with democratic values.

In response to the widespread vandalism and violence, which left nearly 200 law enforcement officers injured, President Sergio Mattarella expressed full solidarity with the police and called for an in-depth analysis of these ‘unprecedented subjects’. The Italian government is expected to convene the Council of Ministers to discuss a new decree aimed at increasing measures to prevent urban violence and criminality.
