Italy lunch costs rise up to 8% in one year

The cost of lunch for workers in Italy is rising significantly, with prices at bars, snack bars, and catering points increasing by up to 8% over the past year. According to an analysis by Federconsumatori using data from the Osservatorio Nazionale Federconsumatori, a complete meal consisting of a first course, water, dessert, and coffee now costs an average of 16.19 euros.

This trend results in an estimated annual expenditure for lunch between 2,760 and 3,250 euros. Over a 25-year period, the price increase for these meals has reached as much as 368%. To mitigate these costs, many workers are turning to cheaper alternatives, such as ready-made meals from supermarkets or bringing a home-prepared meal, known as a ‘schiscetta’.

Preparing meals at home remains the most economical option, costing an average of 4.90 euros—approximately 75% less than eating out. Costs can drop below 2 euros when using budget-friendly ingredients like legumes. In response to these rising costs and stagnant wages, Federconsumatori has called for structural interventions, including an increase in the value of meal vouchers.
