Italy maintains global leadership in pasta production and exports
Italy continues to dominate the global pasta market, leading in both production and exports. In 2025, the country produced approximately 4.2 million tons of pasta, accounting for 69 percent of the total European Union production, which reached 6.1 million tons.
As a major exporter, Italy shipped nearly 2.46 million tons of pasta in 2025, valued at approximately four billion euros. The entire pasta production chain, from wheat cultivation to industrial processing, generated a turnover of 13.5 billion euros and added 3 billion euros in value in 2025.
Italian citizens remain the world's largest consumers, with an average annual consumption of approximately 23.1 to 23.5 kilograms per person. Other high-consumption nations include Tunisia, Hungary, and Germany. While 82 percent of pasta produced in the EU is egg-free, regional preferences vary; for instance, nearly 46 percent of pasta produced in Germany contains eggs.
