A community in Vaglio Basilicata is mourning the death of 57-year-old Maria Vittoria Carbone, who was killed by her son, 31-year-old Giampiero Santamaria, following an argument in Tito.

Santamaria, who has documented mental health issues, confessed to the killing. A judge in Potenza has validated his arrest and ordered his detention in the psychiatric ward of the Bari Policlinico, managed by the prison system. His defense attorney has requested an expert evaluation to determine the suspect's mental capacity at the time of the crime.

Investigations have highlighted potential gaps in mental health support. Santamaria reportedly missed a scheduled medical injection on August 13 because he lacked transportation to reach the mental health center in Potenza.
