Italy manages urban feline colonies through official recognition and local disputes

Local authorities and volunteers in Italy are managing various feline colonies in urban areas. In Muros, the municipal government has officially recognized a protected feline colony consisting of 15 cats and three kittens located near the Su Corrale amphitheater. This recognition initiates an administrative process in coordination with the ASL di Sassari for census, mapping, sterilization, and microchipping. A designated caretaker has been appointed to manage daily feeding and hygiene.

In Pisa, a dispute has emerged in the historic center regarding a colony of approximately 20 cats near Piazza Dante. While volunteers state the animals are registered and well-cared for, a local branch of BPM bank has raised concerns regarding hygiene and sanitation, leading to a suspension of feeding in certain areas. The situation has sparked social media debate regarding the coexistence of animals, commercial activities, and citizens in public spaces.
