Italy mandates digital waste tracking via RENTRI
Italy has transitioned to mandatory digital waste tracking through the National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability (RENTRI). As of September 16, 2026, the paper-based Waste Identification Form (FIR) is no longer an option for regulated operators, who must now use the digital xFIR format.
To assist with this transition, the Ministry of the Environment has updated the system to allow more flexibility regarding errors. The time allowed to revoke an electronic signature and correct data—a process known as rollback—has been doubled from 15 to 30 minutes. However, certain restrictions remain: a rollback is impossible if another operator has already signed the document or if the xFIR has already been downloaded.
Failure to correctly transmit data to RENTRI now carries legal sanctions. To support businesses, consultants, and transporters in adapting to these new digital requirements, a series of free webinars will begin on October 8.
