Italy mandates heat protection rules for live animal transport

On July 10, the Italian Ministry of Health issued an urgent note to veterinary services and the highway police urging transport companies to adopt specific measures during extreme summer temperatures. Operators are instructed to schedule trips during the coolest parts of the day, avoid long stops in hot conditions, verify that animals are fit for travel, limit loading density, and ensure ventilation systems and temperature gauges are functioning. Vehicles must also provide adequate water supplies. Violations can be penalised under Decree 151/2007.

In Swiss animal shelters, similar heat‑related precautions are being applied. Facilities keep birds and reptiles in cooled environments, schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late evening, use shade structures, pools, and chilled fruit, and install vaporizers. Staff monitor ambient temperatures, maintain water bowls for wildlife, and advise volunteers to shorten walks and avoid hot pavement. Both initiatives aim to prevent thermal stress and dehydration in animals during the heat wave.

These coordinated actions underscore the heightened focus on animal welfare amid rising temperatures across Italy and Switzerland.
