Central Italy earthquake: 10 years later, leaders urge completion of reconstruction

Ten years after the devastating earthquake that struck Central Italy on August 24, 2016, Italian leaders have gathered to commemorate the 299 victims and call for the completion of reconstruction efforts. President Sergio Mattarella described the event as a “dramatic page in the history of the Republic” and emphasized the need to strengthen seismic prevention and intervention capabilities.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Amatrice to honor the victims and asserted that the government has implemented a “decisive change of pace” in reconstruction, following years of delays and bureaucratic hurdles. Reconstruction Commissioner Guido Castelli noted that the process is approximately halfway complete, aiming to ensure the “right to stay” for residents of the central Apennines by restoring social and economic stability.

Data from May 2026 indicates that private reconstruction is a massive undertaking, with 36,149 contribution requests totaling 17.82 billion euros. While progress is visible, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi described previous delays as “unbearable” for those who lost everything, stressing that true reconstruction must rebuild communities and social ties, not just buildings.
