Italy medical school enrollments surge amid classroom shortages
Italy is seeing a significant surge in medical school interest as the second edition of the medical filter semester begins. Approximately 52,300 students are enrolled in the program, which uses exams in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to select the top third of candidates to continue their studies.
Infrastructure challenges have emerged due to high demand. At Sapienza University of Rome, which has 1,918 enrollments, classroom space is insufficient, with only about half of the students able to secure a seat. To manage the overflow, the university is implementing a transition from in-person to remote learning throughout the semester.
In the Basilicata region, the University of Basilicata reported 296 students enrolled for only 93 available spots. Regional Health Councilor Cosimo Latronico noted that the growing enrollment in the medical and surgery course is a strategic effort to address healthcare personnel shortages and allow local students to train near home, reducing the economic burden on families.
