Italy Minister identifies recycling as source of strategic raw materials
Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security, has identified recycling as the nation’s primary source of strategic raw materials. Speaking at the tenth anniversary of Cisambiente Confindustria in Rome, the minister noted that while Italy lacks significant natural raw material resources, it can utilize previously used materials as a vital supply.
Pichetto Fratin highlighted Italy’s leadership in the European Union regarding plastic recycling, stating that the country’s plastic waste collection rate exceeds 75%. He emphasized the importance of strengthening this production chain to mitigate market competition and economic crises.
Additionally, the minister pointed to the potential of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) to provide rare minerals and materials through recovery and dismantling processes.
