Italy mobility sector seeks regulatory updates for autonomous driving and electric vehicles
Motus-E has submitted proposals to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to modernize regulations for autonomous driving. A key request involves replacing the mandatory requirement for an on-board controller with a remote supervision system, a model already utilized for autonomous shuttles and robotaxis in parts of Europe. The association also advocates for delegating detailed autonomous driving rules to ministerial decrees to allow for faster technological updates.
Separately, the Smart Mobility Report 2026, released by Politecnico di Milano’s E&S Group, indicates a recovery in the electric mobility sector. While 2025 saw growth in both vehicle registrations and infrastructure in Italy and Europe, the report warns that Italy’s 2030 National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) targets remain difficult to reach without increased incentives and a more widespread charging network. In Italy, electric vehicle market share rose to 12.6% in 2025, though this remains approximately half of the European average.
