Italy moves to tighten environmental safeguards after Remat fire and Aeolian desalination plans

On 12 July 2026 a fire devastated the Remat waste‑treatment plant in San Giorgio a Liri, Frosinone. Subsequent ARPA Lazio monitoring found dioxin levels above legal limits, prompting bans on local water use and consumption of produce from the area. Deputy Valentina Grippo (Azione) submitted a written parliamentary inquiry on 29 July asking the Environment, Energy Security and Health ministries to detail the health and environmental consequences, ongoing monitoring, and remediation actions for the site and surrounding municipalities.

In the Aeolian Islands, the legal association GrIG has asked for stricter reviews of four new desalination projects on Panarea, Stromboli, Alicudi and Filicudi. The group warns that the discharge of concentrated brine could damage marine habitats, especially Posidonia oceanica meadows, and calls for full compliance with environmental authorisations and impact assessments before the plants become operational.
