Italy names 48 swimmers for 2026 European Championships

The Italian Swimming Federation has announced a 48‑member roster for the 2026 European Swimming Championships, to be held in Paris from 10‑16 August. The squad is the second‑largest Italy has ever selected for a European Championships held outside the country, surpassed only by the 56‑person team for the 2022 Rome edition.

Selection was based on performances at the Italian Championships in Riccione and the Sette Colli meet in Rome, with event winners securing places and discretionary picks filling the remaining spots. The lineup features world‑record holder Thomas Ceccon in the 100 m backstroke, 50 m breaststroke world champion Simone Cerasuolo, European‑record holder and 2025 world silver medallist Simona Quadarella, and multiple‑record setter Sara Curtis. Other notable swimmers include Nicolo Martinenghi, Thomas Ceccon, and Ludovico Viberti, who ranks among the fastest ever in the 50 breast.

The federation highlighted the mix of veteran champions and emerging talent, aiming to maximise medal chances across sprint, distance and relay events. The team’s depth reflects Italy’s strategic focus on maintaining its status as a continental swimming powerhouse.
