Italy nuclear energy bill faces political opposition

Political opposition is mounting in Italy against a government bill aimed at reactivating nuclear energy through the use of mini-reactors. Critics argue the proposal fails to provide immediate relief for rising energy costs, noting that concrete results from such technology may not be available for decades.

Rosaria Capozzi of the Movimento 5 Stelle has criticized the plan as ideological propaganda, highlighting unresolved issues regarding infrastructure, safety, and the management of radioactive waste. She warned that the complexity of siting and securing such plants is being oversimplified.

In Puglia, the Partito Democratico has voiced strong opposition, specifically regarding the potential designation of the Alta Murgia—a UNESCO protected area—as a site for national nuclear waste storage. Domenico De Santis stated that the region should focus on renewable energy and efficiency rather than returning to nuclear power, which he claims would be a regression of 40 years.
