Italy obesity rates: Policlinico di Milano launches new care pathway
In Italy, 46.3% of the adult population is overweight and 11.8% is obese. To address this, the Policlinico di Milano has implemented a new diagnostic-therapeutic-assistential pathway (Pdta) for obesity management. Coordinated by Anna Ludovica Fracanzani, the program targets patients with grade II and III obesity, as well as grade I patients with comorbidities, focusing on a multidisciplinary approach that includes nutritional, metabolic, and psychological evaluations.
Separately, the industry group Federalimentare has criticized the effectiveness of sugar taxes. The group argues that while taxation can influence consumer behavior and product reformulation, it does not directly reduce obesity rates. They cited England as an example, noting that despite a 46% reduction in sugar content in beverages since 2015, adult obesity rates rose from 28% to 30% following the 2018 Soft Drinks Industry Levy.
