Italy observes National Day for Patient Safety

September 17 marks the National Day for the Safety of Care and the Assisted Person in Italy, an observance established in 2019 in alignment with the World Health Organization’s World Patient Safety Day.

The day emphasizes the fundamental right to receive appropriate, timely, and continuous medical care. Key objectives include the prevention of medical errors, ensuring quality of service, correct medication use, and maintaining continuity of care throughout the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation processes.

Looking toward 2026, the World Health Organization has identified “Patient safety for non-communicable diseases” as its central theme. This focus addresses chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes, renal diseases, and mental health disorders, which require long-term management and consistent medical oversight.
