Italy observes National Guide Dog Day to promote accessibility
October 16 marks the National Guide Dog Day in Italy, an initiative promoted by the Unione Italiana dei Ciechi e degli Ipovedenti (UICI) to raise awareness about the essential role these animals play for blind and visually impaired individuals.
Guide dogs provide more than companionship; they are vital tools for autonomy, safety, and freedom of movement. They assist with navigating streets, using public transport, and accessing workplaces or commercial establishments. The training allows them to identify obstacles and navigate potentially dangerous situations, working in collaboration with the user.
Despite Italian laws—specifically Law no. 37 of 1974 and subsequent amendments—protecting the right of guide dogs to accompany their owners into public spaces, issues regarding access persist. Organizations like the UICI Reggio Calabria section emphasize that preventing access due to misinformation or prejudice directly limits the independence and rights of visually impaired citizens.
