Italian Ministry of Education authorizes 46,642 teacher posts for 2026‑27

The Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) has detailed the upcoming 2026‑27 hiring cycle for Italian public schools. Scores for the Graduatorie Provinciali per le Supplenze (GPS) 2026 are now visible to teachers who have released their reserve, with the full graduation lists expected to be published from 14 July.

The government’s hiring plan targets 44,642 permanent teaching positions, but the Ministry of Economy and Finance authorised a total of 46,642 posts, concentrating around 22,712 in northern Italy and 12,129 in Lombardy. Trade union leaders warn that the number falls short of the demand, leaving over 200,000 annual substitute slots and a high rate of precarious support‑staff contracts.

From 16 July to 29 July 2026, teachers must submit up to 150 preferences for GPS and Graduatorie ad Esaurimento (GaE). Errors can trigger sanctions, and some preferences become irrevocable once confirmed.

The procedural note (Nota n. 18007) issued on 10 July opens the window for provisional assignment applications. Permanent‑teacher requests are accepted online until 23 July, while temporary‑contract and ATA staff must submit paper applications by 23 July or 4 August respectively. The note also confirms exemptions for new hires, including reduced age thresholds for family‑related waivers.
