Italian Senate passes Decreto Sport, tightening pool safety and funding upgrades

All public and publicly‑accessible private pools must ensure that suction outlets – such as bottom grates and suction nozzles – cannot create vortexes that trap swimmers; non‑compliant facilities are to be closed immediately until they meet the new standards.
The law also mandates the use of swim caps for anyone under 16 years old in affected pools and earmarks more than €4.7 million, to be spent by 2026, for technical upgrades. Additional provisions simplify administrative procedures for major international sport events, notably Euro 2032 and the America’s Cup 2027, and address the effectiveness of identity documents in sport.
Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi highlighted the reform as a step toward making sport a national asset, linking the safety measures with broader reforms of the Uits governing body.
