Italy performs first fully implantable cochlear implants
Medical professionals in Piacenza and Siena have performed the first fully implantable cochlear implants in Italy. This new technology is designed for individuals with severe to profound deafness and differs from traditional implants by placing all components, including the microphone and battery, beneath the skin.
Unlike conventional devices that require an external component to be removed for sleeping, recharging, or during certain activities, these invisible implants allow for continuous sound access 24 hours a day. The devices use specialized microphones designed to detect sound through the skin, converting it into electrical signals that stimulate the cochlea.
The procedures were conducted as part of a pilot program promoted by the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions. While the technology has received safety certification, it is not yet included in the standard reimbursement list of the Italian National Health Service. In Piacenza, the surgery was led by an otolaryngology team directed by Domenico Cuda, while in Siena, the team was led by Professor Marco Mandalà.
