Italy introduces 2027 car tax exemption for vehicles under 80 kW

The Italian government has introduced a decree for 2027 that exempts certain vehicles from the annual car tax (bollo auto). To qualify, the vehicle must have a power output not exceeding 80 kW (approximately 109 CV) for gasoline, diesel, or hybrid engines. This measure applies to one vehicle per person and includes owners, lessees, and long-term renters.

Major automotive groups have identified numerous models that meet these criteria. Stellantis reports that several models from Citroën, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, and Opel will benefit, including the Citroën C3, Fiat 500 Hybrid, and Jeep Avenger. Volkswagen also has qualifying models, such as the Polo and T-Cross, though higher-power models like the Golf and T-Roc are excluded.

The 80 kW threshold has sparked discussion regarding its impact on the market, as a single kilowatt can represent a significant difference in tax liability. Additionally, public opinion remains divided on the measure, with some viewing it as necessary relief due to rising fuel costs and others criticizing it as a temporary or demagogic political move.

Concurrently, authorities have issued warnings regarding a new phishing scam targeting motorists. Cybercriminals are using fraudulent websites that mimic the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) to claim unpaid taxes. These sites attempt to steal personal information and credit card details by threatening administrative sanctions or vehicle impoundment.
