Italy proposes 2027 car tax exemption for vehicles up to 80 kW

The Italian government has announced a temporary tax exemption for the 2027 car tax (bollo auto) for vehicles with a maximum power output of 80 kW, as indicated in their registration documents. This measure, which may become permanent in 2028, applies to individual owners and those with long-term leases or rentals. The exemption covers gasoline, diesel, and hybrid vehicles, provided the thermal engine does not exceed the 80 kW threshold.

Stellantis has identified numerous compatible models across its brands, including various Fiat, Citroën, Jeep, Lancia, Opel, and Peugeot vehicles. For hybrid models, the exemption is determined by the power of the internal combustion engine rather than the total system output.

The proposal has faced criticism from environmental groups, such as the Forum Ferrara Partecipata, which argues that incentivizing private vehicle use contradicts emission reduction goals. They suggest that the estimated 2.3 billion euro loss in tax revenue should instead be redirected toward strengthening local public transportation.
