Italy plans repurposing of Napoli-Cancello railway tracks
Italian infrastructure officials are evaluating the repurposing of the historical Napoli-Cancello railway line following the activation of the Napoli-Bari high-speed route. Tullio Ferrante, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, indicated that the decommissioned tracks present an opportunity to improve mobility in the northern Naples hinterland, specifically connecting areas such as Acerra, Casalnuovo, Casoria, and Naples.
Proposed solutions include implementing urban transport services and potentially converting the tracks into a tramway network. To facilitate this, the Campania Region is tasked with initiating a transport study to identify the most effective structural solutions for the area.
In a related development regarding regional logistics, the Campania Region has addressed concerns regarding the Valle Ufita logistics platform and the Hirpinia Station. The regional administration confirmed that the railway connection for the Valle Ufita logistics hub remains part of the approved Masterplan. This project, connected to the Napoli-Bari high-speed line, aims to enhance rail freight transport and was programmed with a maximum amount of 130 million euros through the 2021-2027 FESR regional program.
