Italian police dismantle nationwide elderly fraud ring

Italian law‑enforcement agencies have uncovered a coordinated fraud network that targets senior citizens across the country. The criminals pose as police officers or claim a family member is involved in a serious accident, pressuring victims to hand over cash, gold jewelry and other valuables. Using the “fake incident” technique, suspects travel from southern regions to the north, often moving by train to return to their base.

Investigations by the Polizia Ferroviaria, Carabinieri and local police have led to a series of arrests: seven suspects were detained in the first half of 2026 and charged while more than €150,000 in cash and gold were seized. Individual operations include the capture of a 28‑year‑old in Ravenna after a son intervened, the arrest of two men in Macerata, three suspects in Agrigento, and multiple arrests in Rome Termini station where surveillance footage helped intercept a suspect carrying over 130 g of gold. Victims ranged from an 88‑year‑old woman in Ravenna to a 95‑year‑old in Sicily. Authorities stress the importance of public vigilance, reminding citizens that police never ask for money or valuables over the phone.
