Italy: Political concerns rise over environmental cleanup and industrial management

In Italy, political representatives from the Movimento 5 Stelle are raising concerns regarding stalled environmental and industrial management projects.

In the Pedaggera area of Capriata d’Orba, the environmental cleanup process remains stuck in the preliminary phase five years after its launch. Regional Councilor Pasquale Coluccio highlighted that the professional assignment required for site characterization has not yet been formally awarded. The site is classified as an “orphan site” containing pollutants from buried industrial waste, including solvents and oils. Regional Environment Assessor Matteo Marnati indicated that a professional has been identified and the assignment is expected to be formalized in October.

Separately, in Sicily, MP Filippo Scerra has called for transparency regarding the future of the Ias industrial plant and its consortium purifier. As large companies begin to detach from Ias, there is uncertainty surrounding a potential transition to public regional management. Scerra is demanding clarity from the Sicilian Region on funding, the responsible public entity, and guarantees for workers' employment and job security, noting the essential nature of the plant for treating civil waste in areas such as Siracusa, Floridia, and Solarino.
